Overview
XIU is a free encryption/decryption software for medium size text files (*.rtf, *.txt, *.htm, *.eml, etc). It creates encrypted text files by simply dragging and dropping them into the program's text section, icon or shortcut. Additionally, it includes a mail client that lets you send the encrypted texts by e-mail to anyone who also has a copy of XIU and knows the password you used.
XIU is not intended to encrypt sensitive data, for that you should use a professional encryption package. However, XIU provides a level of privacy that fits the needs of a large base of users.
Install and Uninstall
To install, you only have to unzip the distributed compressed files to a folder. For easy of use, create a shortcut of xiu.exe in your desktop. This way you can simply drop a text file into the icon, in order to start encryption/decryption. To uninstall, delete the folder and the files inside it.
Using XIU
Text
In order to Encrypt or Decrypt a text you need to feed XIU with it. You can do it in several ways:
- Open XIU and type your own text
- Open XIU and copy and paste a text from another document
- Open XIU and drag and drop a file into it
- With XIU closed, drop a file in the program's icon or shortcut icon
Password
Click the Password button in order to enter the secret cypher code that will be used to encrypt or decrypt a text. This code can have 1 to 8 digits (8 is the strongest) and any combination of numbers (1 to 9). Please note that, for security reasons, XIU will not remember a password entered after you close the program. So, write it down, if necessary.
Encrypt and Decrypt
All you have to do is to click the Encrypt or Decrypt buttons.
Save
You may save the encrypted or decrypted file by clicking the Save button.
E-mail
You may send encrypted texts by e-mail using the internal mail client of XIU. For that click the button with the e-mail icon to open the mail window.
Configure
Before you send mail for the first time, click the Configure button and enter your Outgoing SMTP server name and Port number. If your mail server requires authentication then you must provide your Username and Password too. If you don't know them, open your default e-mail client (Outlook, Eudora, etc) and get these elements from its configuration.
Send
When you click the Send button, XIU will try to send by e-mail any text (encrypted or not) existing on the text area. Look at the information on the top of the mail panel to see the result of this operation. XIU will remember the 10 most recent used e-mail addresses you entered in the From: field and the most 15 addresses entered in the To: field. You can enter in these fields only an e-mail address or a name and an e-mail address inside angle brackets.

Two buttons on the left of the From and To fields let you delete ALL the most recent addresses used.

XIU is FREEWARE which means that you can use and distribute free of charges the files included in the zip archive.
